montreal-based Jennifer Reed is the founder of a jewellery company turning second-hand finds into unique designs

Interview by Victoria Ford

How do you choose your materials? I try to recycle materials whenever I can. I take pleasure knowing that I found a necklace at a garage sale and recycled it into something beautiful and unique. I've scavenged zippers from people's hoodies, belt buckles and pants.

I used to work for a place that made designer dog collars and their throwaways were gold to me.

You say Miasma Designs "exalts the individual." How do you tailor to each client? Every piece I make is different, so it has to be individual because the client is getting the only one!

Who or what inspires your style? Honestly? Vogue (laughs). I love the magazine, the photos, the ads - I can see what's new and upcoming, what materials are being used in jewellery and clothing. It lets me know what kind of neckline to pay attention to, what colours are in style. Are feathers in and chains out? That sort of thing.

Have you had any interesting clients? I'm sure all my clients are interesting. But I'm meant to be doing a jewellery party for all the wives of the Montreal Canadiens hockey team. That should be interesting. WMO
